The 954 field guide

954, 754, and neighboring South Florida codes

Understand Broward’s overlay and its relationship with Palm Beach and Miami-Dade numbering regions.

Broward’s numbering history

954 split from 305 on September 11, 1995. The 754 overlay was introduced in phases beginning in 2001, adding another code to the same Broward region.

An overlay does not mean that businesses with the newer code are less local. It provides additional numbers without requiring existing users to change their code.

Do not treat South Florida as one code

Broward’s 954/754 region is distinct from Palm Beach’s 561/728 and Miami-Dade and the Keys’ 305/786/645. Published maps give a regional guide, not proof of a particular address.

A business serving several counties should describe that territory directly. A phone number is not a substitute for the actual location and service information customers need.

Full digits and provider checks

Use the area code and seven-digit number for local dialing. Include all ten digits in cards, booking messages, and stored contacts.

Check the exact number with the intended provider before buying. Carrier eligibility, messaging, and routing depend on the proposed service, not on the appeal of the area code alone.
